General information

The presence of Nador (Morocco) in the media is largely increasing due to the incidents around the boundary fence that borders with Melilla. On the other side of the steel curtain, the streets of Nador host many people with no qualification suffering from uncertain and precarious labor situation.

In spite of these series of events, Nador offers an extraordinary tourist potential. Many efforts are being set in motion to promote this Moroccan municipality, which has recently become an important financial place in the country. In this way, the Diocese of Tangier, through its delegation in Nador (leaded by Father Esteban Velázquez SJ) has been working for several years to boost the socioeconomic development in the area.

Baraka Centre offers vocational training to the most vulnerable young people in Nador enabling them to access a labor market highly likely to grow and develop and contributing to the improvement of the employment and economic situation. However, Baraka Center not only pays attention to the qualification and training of the youth, but they also focus on social integration through a training model based in multiculturalism.

Belangrijkste kenmerken

The Baraka Centre, which trains, guides and promote social and labor integration is working from 2009. This project was born thanks to the combined efforts of Solidaridad Don Bosco, the AECID (Spanish Agency for Cooperation and International Development) and Caritas in Tangier. Since then, the center has offered vocational training such as bakery, cookery, plumbing, IT, electricity, etc., reaching the professional qualification of 105 young people aged between 17 and 25 years.

ETEA Foundation for Development and Cooperation aims at boosting the use of the Baraka Center’s facilities and contributing to head its training and employability guidance activities towards the tourist sector. While integrating and respecting the cultures in the area, ETEA Foundation will support Baraka Center by focusing on the following lines of activity:

Specific Vocational Training
The objective is to develop specific skills linked to the tourist and restaurant industry such as dress-making and tailoring, electricity, plumbing, cookery and bakery.

Basic Training
It offers additional training courses on French and other skills such as mathematics, IT
management, economic management and other client-oriented knowledge and skills.

Transversal Training
This aspect will consider Spanish language, employability guidance and post monitoring activities for their entrance in the labor market.

Integration and Intercultural Training
The integration of local cultures such as Moroccan, Sub-Saharan, Berber and European is one of the main strengths of Baraka Center’s work. This aspect is reinforced by training activities related to education in intercultural values.

Waarom is dit belangrijk

This project is built on a sustainability oriented basis for Baraka Center. Thus, in the future, the center will mainly focus on new synergies with companies from the service sector (particularly tourist companies) so that the training activities are adapted and guided by the demands of the labor market. In this way, Baraka Center could meet the Moroccan companies’ employment demands. In return, Moroccan companies should commit to the sustainability of the center and its long-term feasibility.

Our main motivation is contributing to the development of Nador by training highly qualified professionals able to tackle as well as to adapt themselves to the labor market requirements (tourism, infrastructures). This fact, will lead to a turning point where they will be able to cover inexistent or hardly covered positions in the area. In addition, it will promote the creation of self-employment initiatives (cooperatives, associations). All this will have as a result an infrastructure improvement, an increased local-belonging, a better quality of life and an increase in the level of education.

With this project we expect to help the young people in Nador who have left school so they are able to enter the labor market and society. These young people have social, economic and psychological problems that need to be tackled and solved, having these young people as the main and central actors. They will be the motor of their social change from the beginning; they will be assisted to develop motivations regarding their social and labor future.

The project aims to help a total of 500 people, especially young people in a situation of marginalization or social exclusion aged between 16 and 24. This initiative is particularly concerned about those people whose economic situation is below poverty line and have to look for precarious positions in the black economy market.

Doelen van de crowdfunding campagne

Currently, accessing finance aid from developing aid funds is becoming complex and difficult. However, education and training necessities in Nador are increasing, students lack from economic resources and the need for funds to develop the training activities at Baraka Center is pressing. It is at this point, where we all go into action.

ETEA Foundation together with Universidad Loyola Andalucía want to collaborate with the invaluable work of Baraka Center by combining our resources with the contribution of all those people and institutions who are interested in helping the future of Nador and its population.

Team en ervaring

ETEA Foundation for Development and Cooperation is a center from Universidad Loyola Andalucía. Its activities range from training, research and action in the field of development and cooperation. Since training has always been considered an essential aspect in development processes, ETEA Foundation has worked for many years in the strengthening of training systems and structures for human capital.

Caritas Diocese of Tangier is the official organization of the Church created to promote, coordinate, boost and guide the solidarity actions in the Diocese of Tangier. From 2010, Caritas Nador and its representative Father Esteban Velázquez SJ have managed Baraka Center. His extensive previous experience in education initiatives with young people at risk of social and school exclusion will entail an absolute involvement and a guarantee for the execution of this project.

Universidad Loyola Andalucía, as an institution belonging to the Society of Jesus, is closely linked to the network of Jesuit institutions. Indeed, the special relationship that ETEA Foundation has with father Velázquez has driven the implementation of this initiative.

The commitment undertaken to collaborate with Baraka Center could only be understood once immersed in the real daily situation of Nador. In a context that raises the question of a necessary and urgent effective measure for this kind of project; the personal commitment of Father Velazquez and his team is absolute, unquestionable and necessary.
