About this project

Help Zaida to participate in Homeward Bound and help other women to work against climate change

Homeward Bound fees
In total I need about € 20,000 to participate in Homeward Bound [€ 17,000 of tuition (that includes training throughout the year and the Antarctic expedition) + transportation to Ushuaia + thermal clothing + travel insurance]. I have already obtained a 25% sponsorship from the CFI company of Palencia, and I am in negotiations to get more support from companies and institutions. That is why I ask the crowdfunding community to get, ideally, 25% of the total financing, that is, € 5,000. I have put at least € 1,000, but the ideal would be to get € 5,000. Either way, the project will succeed. Whether financing is easier or harder to obtain, I will get it, even if I need to borrow, so there is no risk that the project will fail. That said, the more we get here, the more time and energy I will have to devote myself to work for gender equality and the protection of nature, so the more you can give me, the better. Thank you!

Homeward Bound fees
It is unlikely, because I still need 75% of the financing (€ 15,000; you can read the detailed explanation of the costs above), but if we exceed what is necessary, what I would do is ask the collaborators, if you prefer to donate it to (1) other Homeward Bound participants or (2) the Jane Goodall Roots and Shoots Foundation (which educates girls and boys to care for nature).

General information

We are at a critical moment: we can no longer stop climate change, but we can make its consequences less harmful. We have less than 12 years to achieve it, and the only way to this is to become sustainable. Women are demonstrating a leadership model based on integrity, resilience and collaboration that can be key to solving environmental problems and reaching a sustainable planet, we want to improve the world and we are prepared for it!
But, for now, women are less than 15% in leadership positions in all areas. That's why Homeward Bound is so important, because it is creating a network of 1,000 scientific leaders to work together for a sustainable world . Homeward Bound is in its fifth edition (HB5), and they have seen in me the qualities they seek on their members: scientific knowledge, responsibility, integrity, resilience and ability to collaborate for a common good. Participating in Homeward Bound means training in collaborative leadership , with the best teachers in the world and being part of a super network of scientists with a common goal: to empower other girls and women and improve the sustainability of the planet.
My goals are clear: (1) empower other women and girls and (2) get us to live in more balance with nature . I ask you to collaborate with me so that I can participate in Homeward Bound and achieve those goals. That is why I ask you to collaborate with me to participate in Homeward Bound, since my participation will help other women and the environment.

What is Homeward Bound?

It is a revolutionary project that aims to train —within ten years—1,000 women scientists worldwide in collaborative leadership, to form a powerful network of scientific women leaders who work for a more egalitarian society that relates more respectfully with nature. The main objectives of the Homeward Bound participants are to improve in gender equality and to fight against climate change.
Homeward Bound is in the 5th edition (# TeamHB5), in which 80 women from all over the world have been selected to participate. The program is an intensive one-year course in collaborative leadership and scientific communication, taught online by the best professionals from around the world, culminating in a three-week congress-expedition to Antarctica. After the training period, Homeward Bound scientists continue to work on projects that improve our future.
The system, for the moment, makes it difficult for women to move forward in our careers and inspire and help others. Although may be dificult to see its value in the short term, the Homeward Bound project is revolutionary, since encouraging women scientists to lead will facilitate the lifes and work of those who come later. That is why the project will have such a great impact: (1) helping other girls and women of the world in different aspects (so that they have an easier time dedicating themselves to science and being able to reach decision-making positions, so that they have a better education , and also so that they are less vulnerable to the consequences of climate change and (2) protecting the environment and climate. The return of each participant to society will be important, and, in addition, being a network of 1,000 leaders , the collective impact of the project is huge.

Why women?

We, women, are more than half of the people, but we are underrepresented in all positions of leadership and decision-making. We are currently 60% of university graduates, but we only occupy 10-20% of important academic positions. In decision making, we do not reach 15%.
It is proved that having more diverse teams improves the outcomens of any activity —particularly, science—, so it is clear that improving gender equality in decision-making will make us get better solutions to the current environmental crises. In addition, it is proven that women take more care of the environment, for example, it is known that countries with more women in parliament take more action against climate change, and that it is not by chance, is a direct consequence of the work of Those women. Therefore, Homeward Bound training in leadership, visibility and strategy skills, starting with participants with a deep scientific knowledge and a common purpose of building a solid work network, which will consolidate us as scientific leaders, will have a great impact on making the appropriate decisions to have more sustainable societies.

Why science?

Science plays a key role in solving social and environmental problems and building a better future. Therefore, Homeward Bound aims to improve the visibility and communication and impact capacity of women working in STEMM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine). In addition to the great gender inequality in leadership in this general, women working in STEMM face specific challenges that make it difficult for them to advance in the scientific career. Yet, women leaders with STEMM background are essential to develop and conduct projects that will help humans to interact more balancedly with nature.

Why Antarctica?

The habitats of Antarctica are the most sensitive to current environmental crises, where the impact of climate change is most appreciated. Therefore —and taking into account that there are no native humans there— Homeward Bound participants will become ambassadors in defense of Antarctica and a future in which humans can relate to nature in a more balanced way.
In addition, the three-week Antarctic expedition, in which the 80 participants will work together —with international figures of the relevance of Musimbi Kanyoro and Christiana Figueres as teachers on board the ship— is a key point of the training on leadership. Learning and working so many women, with intersidisplinary backgrounds and different ages and nationalities, inside a boat under extreme conditions in the most remote and fragile environment of Earth will provide them with a life-changing traning experience that will largerly reinforce their leadership habilities.
Finally, it is important to note that we are aware that traveling to Antarctica generates a strong environmental impact, and that is why our trip is organized to pollute as little as possible, reducing, reusing and recicling everything, and offsetting all carbon dioxide emissions that cannot be reduced through programs of compensation. I am also reducing my emissions and pollution since many years ago, moving by bike, reducing the use of plastics and avoiding meat. In adition, I am going to reduce flying to the minimum, replacing by train whenever possible. However, and despite I am concerned about the carbon footprint of my travel to Antarctica, I think that the benefit to society is going to be big enough, and that is why I think is worth it.

Waarom is dit belangrijk

The Homeward Bound project is aimed at women with training in STEMM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine) who have the energy and skills necessary to become leaders to collaborate with other women to improve gender equality, against climate crisis and for a sustainable planet.
I have been chosen to participate in Homeward Bound. Therefore, this campaign is intended to support my participation in the program. Homeward Bound gives me a scholarship that covers 60% of the program costs, and the other 40% I have to get it, so I need your help. I ask you for collaboration to finance my participation, but with the clear objective of giving a return to society and the environment, since I will always work —just as I already do but with much more impact— to improve gender equality and protect nature.

Team en ervaring

I am a biologist, with a master's degree in biodiversity and another in statistics, and a PhD in ecology. I have more than ten years of experience as a scientist. My work is based on (1) research , (2) training other biologists, and (3) communicating science and trying to make people understand that the environment must be taken care of and improve in gender equality. In research , I study the influence of environmental temperature on the behavior of terrestrial vertebrates (from lizards to giant anteaters), to also know how climate change will affect them and what we can do to reduce its impact. Regarding training , I teach at the university, from statistics and field ecology or animal behavior, and I also supervise research of master's and PhD students. In communication , I organize several events of talks and mini-courses, and I also use social networks and art to disseminate science, including graphic facilitation. As for awareness on climate change and gender equality, I move mainly on a daily basis, in social networks, and also in talks. My participation in Homeward Bound will be very positive to consolidate my communication and strategy skills. My participation in Homeward Bound will be key to consolidate my communication and strategy skills, and integrate into a huge network of scientific women leaders working for the same goals (which will greatly enhance the results). With what I learn, I will mainly help girls and women in my area (Palencia and Salamanca, Spain) and the university where I work (Federal University of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil), although I will also carry out actions in other parts of the world. In addition, I will be able to help disseminate and preserve nature and find sustainability solutions much more effectively than until now, so I think that we all win .
